老照片识别指南：靠画面里的线索把年代和地点找出来

Start with the object you are holding

Before squinting at collars and hemlines, look at what the photograph is printed on. The physical support narrows the range faster than anything inside the frame, and it is the one set of clues nobody in the family can argue about.

• A thick cabinet card mount with a photographer imprint along the bottom edge belongs roughly to the 1880s through the early 1900s.
• Thin card stock with a glossy surface and a narrow white border became the default after 1900.
• A deckled or scalloped edge generally means the 1910s or 1920s.
• A processing lab stamp bleeding through from the back puts the print in the 1950s or later, and often names the lab and its town.
• Kodak printed a repeating code pattern on the back of its paper for decades, which resolves to a year on its own.

Write those observations down before anything else. It is easy to get invested in a clothing guess and then quietly ignore a paper stock that contradicts it.

Clues inside the frame

Clothing dates a photograph to a range rather than to a year, and that range is usually ten years wide. Establish the range first, then use the remaining clues to pull it tighter.

• Collars: tall standing collars belong before 1910, and by 1920 they had flattened.
• Hems: floor length skirts lifted to the ankle around 1915 and to the knee after 1926.
• Sleeves: the leg-of-mutton sleeve deflates quickly after 1900.
• Eyewear: round wire gave way to oval, then to the octagonal shapes that dominate the 1920s.
• Vehicles: external running boards and upright radiators are gone from new cars by the mid 1930s.
• Children in dresses rather than trousers says little after 1925, since studios kept the habit long after families dropped it.

Vehicles are the most reliable item on that list. A readable number plate is better still, and local motoring clubs frequently keep registers going back far enough to use them.

Studio imprints are the fastest shortcut

A printed photographer name turns a guessing game into a look-up, because most studios occupied a given address for a short stretch. Once you have the address history, the print has a hard bracket around it.

Tools worth using

Most of these cost nothing, and the order matters less than doing the quick ones first. Check the directories before you join a forum.

• Reverse image search turns up the same print indexed elsewhere, sometimes already captioned by somebody who did this work years ago.
• City directories give the span a studio traded at a given address, which usually beats any estimate based on fashion.
• Newspaper archives match a portrait to an announcement, and wedding and funeral notices carry full names.
• Local history and genealogy groups identify regional studio backdrops on sight, which is expertise you cannot fake.
• Running the print through /restore sometimes brings back a street sign or shopfront that was illegible before, and one readable word can settle it.

Old photo identification FAQ

• Can you date a photograph from clothing alone? Only to a decade. Paper stock and studio imprints are far tighter, so use clothing to confirm rather than to decide.
• What if the back of the print is completely blank? Work from the mount thickness and surface finish, then look at vehicles and background architecture. A blank back is common and does not mean the photo is undatable.
• Should I write on an old photograph? Not on the front, and never in ballpoint. A soft pencil note on the back edge, or a written card in the sleeve, lasts far longer than memory.
• How do I confirm a guess once I have one? Find a second source that agrees. Two independent clues pointing to the same decade are worth more than one confident reading.

看手上的实物

先别急着研究领子和下摆，先看照片印在什么上面。相纸和卡纸给出的范围比画面里的任何细节都窄，而且这部分线索家里人不太可能认错。

• 厚卡纸上压印着相馆名、印在下缘的，大致是 1880 年代到 1900 年代初。
• 薄卡纸、光面、带窄白边的，是 1900 年之后的主流做法。
• 毛边或扇贝边的，多半是 1910 到 1920 年代。
• 背面透出冲印店红章的，进入 1950 年代之后，有时还带着店名和城镇。
• 柯达在相纸背面印过一批可解码的花纹，对着表格就能直接读出年份。

动手之前先把这几点记下来。人是会先入为主的，一旦定了某个"看着像二十年代"的判断，就很容易无视与它矛盾的相纸信息。

画面里能读出来的东西

衣着只能把照片定到一段区间，通常是十年，而不是某一年。先定区间，再用其它线索往里收。

• 领子：1910 年之前是高竖领，到 1920 年基本翻平。
• 裙摆：1915 年前后从落地提到脚踝，1926 年之后到膝盖。
• 袖子：羊腿袖在 1900 年之后迅速收窄。
• 眼镜：圆金属框之后是椭圆框，再到 1920 年代占据主流的八角框。
• 汽车：外置踏板和竖直水箱款式到 1930 年代中期已经停产。
• 孩子穿裙子还是裤子，1925 年之后参考价值很低，相馆把这套习惯一直留着。

这里面最可靠的是汽车。看得清车牌就更好，不少地方的老车俱乐部留着足够老的登记册。

相馆压印是最快的捷径

印出来的相馆名把"猜"变成"查"，因为多数相馆在同一个地址上待不了几年。把地址沿革查清楚，这张照片的年份区间就被钉死了。

值得一用的工具

下面这些基本不用花钱，顺序上也没有太多讲究，先把快的做完，再去论坛发帖。

• 以图搜图：同样的照片可能早被别人收进某个图库，连说明文字都已经写好了。
• 城市名录：能查出某家相馆在某个地址经营了几年，通常比看衣服估出来的更准。
• 报纸档案：能把手里的肖像对上某条讣告或结婚启事，名字写得很全。
• 地方志与族谱社群：有人一眼认得出本地区相馆的背景布，这种经验是真造不了假的。
• 把照片放进 /restore 修复一遍，有时会把原本糊掉的街牌或店面字样找回来，一个词就能定案。

趁还记得就写下来

答案常常握在某位亲戚手里，而不是某个档案馆里，这个窗口不会一直开着。背面写下的名字，比任何衣着分析都值钱。

• 先在照片背面或套袋卡片上写下人名，再去做其它判断。
• 把猜测和事实分开写，"看着大概是二十年代"和"这张是 1923 年"是两种信息。
• 核对的时候别忘了一点：家人的说法也会有偏差，能找到第二份佐证才算落地。

老照片识别常见问题

• 只靠衣着能定年代吗？只能定到十年左右的区间。相纸和压印给的范围要准得多，衣着适合用来印证，不适合用来拍板。
• 背面一片空白怎么办？从卡纸厚度和表面质感入手，再看画面里的车和建筑。背面空白很常见，不是说这张就没法定。
• 能在老照片上写字吗？正面不行，圆珠笔更不行。用软铅笔在背面边上写一行，或者写张卡片放进套袋，都比靠记性好。
• 有了猜测怎么确认？找第二处能佐证的线索。两个互不相干的线索指向同一个十年，比一次自信的推断靠谱得多。
