Restoring Old Photos for Genealogy & Family History

For genealogists, a photograph is evidence. It confirms a name, a place, a relationship — and it makes the past feel human. Yet most family archives sit in a shoebox, fading a little more each year. Restoring and sharing them is one of the highest-leverage things you can do for your family history.

Start by gathering and scanning

• Collect prints from relatives before they are lost to time or a move.
• Scan at 300 DPI or photograph flat in even light (see fixing blurry photos).
• Name files with who, when, where — future you will thank you.

Restore the heroes

Not every photo needs work, but the ones that anchor your tree do: the immigrant great-grandparents, the wedding, the childhood portrait. Use OldPhoto to colorize, sharpen faces and repair damage in one pass. A colorized ancestor photo is incredibly compelling in a family-tree profile.

Share so it sticks

1. Post restored photos to your tree and to family group chats — they spark stories nobody wrote down.
